Proper storage keeps medications effective and safe. Incorrect storage can reduce effectiveness or even make medications harmful.
Despite the name "medicine cabinet," bathrooms are often poor storage locations. Heat and humidity from showers can degrade medications. A bedroom drawer or kitchen cupboard (away from the stove) is usually better.
A cool, dark drawer or cupboard away from heat sources and moisture is ideal for most medications.
Some medications need refrigeration:
Don't throw medications in the bin or flush them. Return unwanted or expired medications to your pharmacy for safe disposal through the Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) program — it's free.
