Shingles is a painful rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus stays dormant and can reactivate years later as shingles.
About 1 in 3 people will get shingles. Risk increases with age over 50, weakened immune system, or significant stress.
Antiviral medication works best within 72 hours of rash appearing. See a doctor quickly if you suspect shingles.
Postherpetic neuralgia (ongoing nerve pain) is the most common complication. Shingles near the eye requires urgent specialist assessment.
A shingles vaccine is recommended for adults over 50 and free for those 65+ under the National Immunisation Program.
